Akira

Akira

AKIRA · AKIRA

Set in 1988, the story begins when a young psychic causes a blast that devastates Tokyo and sets the course toward World War III. By 2019, a rebuilt city called Neo-Tokyo has taken its place, but restoration has not brought peace: gang violence and attacks on the government shape life there. Shoutarou Kaneda heads the Capsules, a crew of misfits who ride oversized custom motorcycles, while the rival Clowns keep pulling them into conflict.

During a clash between these motorcycle groups, Kaneda’s closest friend, Tetsuo Shima, collides with an esper who has escaped a government facility and ended up in the city. Afterward, Tetsuo starts exhibiting strange powers of his own. Authorities move to isolate him, fearing that this new psychic force may unleash destruction on a scale capable of reducing Neo-Tokyo to ruins. The story follows the pressure between Tetsuo’s changing abilities, Kaneda’s connection to him, and the government’s urgent effort to contain the danger.

With sci-fi tension and action at its core, Akira places psychic power beside street rivalry, state control, terrorism, and the threat of another city-shattering catastrophe. Its appeal comes from the collision of rebellious motorcycle culture with a fearful government response, all inside a restored but unstable Neo-Tokyo. This is a finished 1988 movie presented as a single episode; start here for the complete story.
