Backflip!!

In Iwanuma City, Miyagi Prefecture, Shoutarou Futaba begins high school with a new fascination: rhythmic gymnastics. After seeing the sport during his final middle-school year, he joins the team at Soushuukan High School, known as Ao High. There he meets Ryouya Misato, a fellow student already recognized for his gymnastics achievements in middle school. The series follows their place within this high school team as Shoutarou takes his first steps into the sport and Ryouya brings experience from his earlier school years.

With sports, comedy, and drama in the mix, Backflip!! balances the energy of a team activity with the personal side of entering a new school and learning a sport. Shoutarou’s excitement and Ryouya’s established reputation create two different starting points for the same team setting, while their friendship gives the story a clear human center. Its focus on high school rhythmic gymnastics gives the sports premise a distinctive setting.
