BELLE
Seventeen-year-old Suzu lives with her father in a rural Kochi town marked by depopulation. Still carrying the wound of losing her mother when she was young, she finds a doorway into U, an enormous online world. There, she adopts the avatar Belle and quickly becomes the focus of attention across the virtual space. That sudden visibility leads her toward a mysterious, notorious figure known as the Dragon, giving Suzu a new and unsettling presence to face.
BELLE balances personal sorrow with the pull of an alternate reality. Its emotional core comes from Suzu’s movement between a quiet, shrinking hometown and a limitless digital world where Belle can be seen by everyone. The contrast creates a thoughtful mystery around the Dragon-like stranger while keeping the focus on a young girl shaped by loss.
As a 2021 anime movie with one episode, BELLE offers a complete story in a single film. Start here: it introduces Suzu, her Belle avatar, the expansive world of U, and the enigmatic Dragon-like figure together, making the movie its own natural entry point.
