Big Fish & Begonia

Big Fish & Begonia

Da Yu Hai Tang · 大鱼海棠

In a realm beyond ordinary human reach, spirits oversee the forces that shape mortal life, from feelings and longing to seasons, weather, and the passage of time. On her sixteenth birthday, Chun leaves that world in dolphin form to investigate the human side of the sea. A violent storm traps her in a net, and a boy from the human world helps her escape. His rescue ends in tragedy, leaving Chun heartbroken.

The boy’s spirit is transformed into a small white fish, and Chun takes on the seemingly impossible task of restoring him to life. Her devotion draws her into a difficult path where grief, responsibility, and hope are closely intertwined. Along the way, Chun confronts the limits of what she can do while gradually growing into a fuller understanding of her own powers.

Fantasy and adventure give the film a mythic scale, while its emotional core remains intimate. Love, death, sacrifice, redemption, and the unsettled feelings of growing up all shape Chun’s story. Its bittersweet tone treats painful choices with compassion, presenting an adolescent spirit whose desire to help someone else becomes a thoughtful exploration of power and consequence.
