Captivated, By You

At school, Hayashi attracts notice without trying. He counts every stair, photographs street signs, and leaves sweet potatoes to dry on the classroom balcony, following his own interests with open sincerity. That unguarded way of moving through a conformist world catches the attention of classmates and even strangers. Nikaidou takes the opposite approach: he has deliberately built a gloomy, forbidding image so people will keep their distance. Many students treat him as a bringer of bad luck and attach supernatural rumors to him. Yet one student sees past the performance and starts testing the edges of the identity Nikaidou has worked so carefully to maintain. The result is a school setup shaped by curiosity, rumor, and the tension between who someone seems to be and who they choose to become.

With Music and Comedy at its core, the series finds humor in Hayashi’s wonderfully specific habits and warmth in the contrast between his openness and Nikaidou’s defensive gloom. Its central appeal is the collision of individuality with school conformity, where small observations can challenge a powerful reputation.
