Fate/Zero

Past attempts to claim the Holy Grail ended without a winner, despite its promise to fulfill any wish. Now the wealthy Einzbern family believes the Fourth Holy Grail War can break that pattern, especially after securing a vessel for the Grail. They bring in Kiritsugu Emiya, a feared “Magus Killer,” and bind him to their cause through his marriage to their daughter, Irisviel.

Kiritsugu is drawn into a lethal struggle against six other contenders, each relying on an ancient familiar and pursuing a personal wish or ideal. His own familiar is Saber, while Kirei Kotomine—a priest searching for relief from an inner void—emerges as his greatest opponent. The result is a battle royale in which survival is never assured.

Fantasy and action frame a story about competing convictions, the cost of desire, and the search for meaning amid a merciless contest. Its appeal comes from the clash between Kiritsugu’s reputation, Kirei’s spiritual emptiness, and the distinct motives driving each participant. The serious mood and survival-focused setup give the Holy Grail War a sharp, character-centered edge.
