FLCL
In a dull little town, twelve-year-old Naota feels stranded in a life that barely changes after his brother goes to America. He lives with his grandfather and father, and even time spent with Mamimi, his brother’s former girlfriend, seems part of the same routine. Then Haruko arrives on a Vespa with pink hair, reckless energy, and a guitar, colliding with Naota’s ordinary world in every sense. After she kisses him and strikes his head with the instrument, Naota discovers that two robots have emerged from his forehead. One remains in his household, while Haruko takes on an unexpectedly domestic role. With battles erupting around him, Naota can no longer rely on the quiet life he knew.
FLCL blends science fiction, action, mecha spectacle, and romance into a strange coming-of-age story. Its humor is unruly and its situations are deliberately bizarre, yet the central thread is Naota’s growth: the upheaval around him pushes a twelve-year-old toward a more adult understanding of himself. Haruko’s wild antics turn personal change into something loud, physical, and unpredictable, giving the series emotional undertones beneath its comic collisions. The result is a compact story about leaving an uneventful childhood behind.
Released in 2000, FLCL is a finished OVA with six episodes. Begin with the first episode to follow Naota’s abrupt break from routine.
