Gabriel DropOut

Gabriel DropOut

Gabriel Dropout · ガヴリールドロップアウト

Gabriel White Tenma arrives among humans as an exceptionally capable young angel, following Heaven’s tradition of placing angels in human society for education. She expects to grow into a proper angel devoted to bringing people happiness. Instead, video games capture her attention so completely that she withdraws from ordinary life and declares herself a “Faillen Angel.” Her new apathy puts her heavenly purpose—and Vignette April Tsukinose’s patience—to the test.

Vignette, a demon who became Gabriel’s friend during her earlier, more angelic days, keeps trying to bring back the person Gabriel used to be. Every effort fails as Gabriel protects her treasured gaming-centered routine. Their time in the human world also brings Gabriel’s classmate Raphiel Ainsworth Shiraha, an angel who enjoys sadistic behavior, and Satanichia McDowell Kurumizawa, a demon whose grand claims of future Underworld rule clash with her clumsiness. Together, the four friends make a comedy out of their confused ideas of angelhood and demonhood.

Its fantasy comedy comes from the gap between these characters’ identities and their behavior: an angel is apathetic, a demon is determined to seem formidable, and their circle rarely matches the ideals attached to Heaven or the Underworld. The setup gives the series a playful look at friendship, expectations, and the messy distance between a role and the person filling it. With four sharply contrasting personalities at its center, Gabriel DropOut builds its appeal from character friction and everyday comic situations.
