Hakuoki ~Demon of the Fleeting Blossom~ Dawn of the Shinsengumi

Hakuouki: Reimeiroku · 薄桜鬼: 黎明録

In 1863, political unrest in Japan spills into killings and clashes across Kyoto. To support the Aizu side, the Tokugawa Shogunate dispatches the Roshigumi, a newly formed group of masterless samurai. Instead of presenting a united front, the force is already fractured, leaving its mission—and the future of both Japan and its members—under serious strain.

Ryunosuke Ibuki is pulled into this dangerous company by Serizawa Kamo, the ruthless leader of its larger faction. A debt of blood leaves Ryunosuke bound to Serizawa in near-slavery, and he has little affection for samurai or their ideals. The smaller faction follows Isami Kondo, a more principled but hesitant leader. As Ryunosuke witnesses the very different lives within the samurai ranks, his hatred begins to give way to the possibility that he and his country might still have a future. For that hope to survive, Kondo must find the resolve to confront Serizawa.

Violence, political division and clashing ideas of honor give this story a tense, troubled atmosphere. At its center is an outsider forced to question his assumptions while stronger personalities compete for control. The conflict is personal as well as national, making Ryunosuke’s changing view of the samurai closely tied to the larger crisis around him.
