Katanagatari
In Edo-era Japan, Shichika Yasuri lives in secluded exile with his sister Nanami. He is the seventh leader of Kyotouryuu, an extraordinary sword discipline where the practitioner turns their own body into the weapon. Their quiet existence changes when Togame, a mysterious and fiercely ambitious strategist, arrives with a request: help the shogunate gather a collection of distinctive swords called the Deviant Blades. Shichika agrees, though his interest lies in Togame herself rather than political duty.
The journey draws the pair into conflict with formidable warriors who wield these celebrated weapons, along with other ambitious forces determined to derail Togame’s goal. Their route is uncertain and dangerous, making cooperation essential. Shichika’s unusual relationship to swordplay and Togame’s strategic drive give the adventure its central contrast, while their partnership must grow strong enough to withstand the opposition. The story combines a personal connection with a mission shaped by power, danger, and competing aims.
Romance, adventure, fantasy, and action meet in a journey built around unusual swordcraft, loyalty, ambition, and uncertainty. The story’s appeal comes from the tension between Shichika’s physical technique and Togame’s calculating purpose, as well as the danger surrounding their objective. Its Edo-era setting and collection-driven structure give the series a focused identity, while the bond at its center keeps the quest personal as well as perilous.
