Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu · 銀河英雄伝説

Across the galaxy, two powers have been locked in a prolonged conflict: the Galactic Empire, opposed by the Free Planets Alliance. Enormous fleets and vast armies keep the fighting alive, while the Empire's Goldenbaum dynasty weakens and the Alliance's democratic system grows increasingly dysfunctional. The balance changes when Imperial Admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-Li of the FPA emerge as opposing commanders.

Reinhard is a gifted minor aristocrat whose rise is tied to a deep resentment: the Kaiser made his elder sister a concubine before placing him in a powerful position. Wen-Li entered the military to pay for university, yet his ability has made him a remarkable leader despite his reluctance. Around each man gather capable soldiers, generals, and thinkers. As both navigate authority, personal and political pressures, battlefield planning, and the demands of leadership, their rivalry threatens the long deadlock and changes them as they try to shape history.

This thoughtful, sentimental military space opera uses a science-fiction setting to examine power, political systems, conviction, and the human cost of prolonged conflict. Its appeal lies in the contrast between two very different leaders and the gifted circles forming around them, with strategy and personal tensions carrying equal weight. The story treats the war as both a massive clash between fleets and a test of the people directing it.

The series is a finished 110-episode OVA from 1988. It is the franchise's central installment, while connected titles serve as supplements. Begin with episode 1.
