Mononoke

Mononoke

モノノ怪

In feudal Japan, a mysterious Medicine Seller travels from place to place hunting hostile spirits known as mononoke. His latest case begins at an inn, where Shino, a pregnant woman, has been given the only room still available. Rest does not last long: the chamber is occupied by a deadly presence, and the danger threatens to claim another victim. Before he can act, the Medicine Seller must determine exactly what he is facing.

His weapon is not enough on its own. The Exorcism Sword can be used only after he has uncovered the spirit’s shape, the truth of its existence, and the reason behind its presence. That requirement turns every encounter into a perilous investigation, combining close observation with intense psychological analysis. As he examines the inn and its occupants, he comes closer to the Zashiki Warashi, the lethal mononoke haunting the room. The inn’s reluctant owner and Shino both form part of the case he must understand.

Mononoke builds its occult tension through questions rather than immediate combat. Its central appeal lies in the contrast between a supernatural threat and the careful, demanding work needed to confront it. The Medicine Seller’s unusual role gives the story an eerie, investigative mood, while the focus on truth, motives, and understanding makes each exorcism feel like a psychological puzzle.
