Ninja Scroll
Set in feudal Japan, the film follows Jubei Kibagami, a swordsman who travels from place to place selling his skill with a blade. Once betrayed and left without a master, he prefers distance from rival factions and their political games. That solitude ends when he rescues Kagero, a female ninja attacked by an enemy whose body can become as hard as stone. Kagero is the only member of her ninja clan left alive, and she is pursuing the final assignment given to her team: finding the cause of a strange plague that erased an entire village.
As Jubei tries to walk away, the Devils of Kimon keep pulling him into the danger. This band of ninjas possesses supernatural abilities, and its stone-skinned member is only the first obstacle. A government spy also poisons Jubei, offering the antidote in exchange for the truth behind the group and the epidemic. The investigation expands from a ruined village to hidden power brokers, a scheme aimed at toppling the government, and the return of someone Jubei believed was gone from his life forever. Kagero's mission and Jubei's reluctant involvement give the film its central tension.
Action and horror meet in a bleak, shadowed tale where survival is tied to duty, trust, and the consequences of old betrayals. The wandering swordsman, the determined ninja investigator, and the unnatural abilities of the Devils of Kimon create a clash between personal independence and forces seeking control. Its movie format keeps the story focused on a single dangerous journey, while the feudal setting and plague mystery give the swordplay an ominous edge. The appeal lies in that combination: hard-edged combat, eerie threats, and political intrigue moving through the same dark adventure.
Released in 1993, Ninja Scroll is a finished movie listed as 1 episode. Its single-episode movie format makes this the natural place to begin, following Jubei and Kagero through the complete story in one sitting.
