Only Yesterday
Taeko Okajima is an office worker in a large city who steps away from her company for a sabbatical in Yamagata Prefecture. She travels to the countryside, where her brother-in-law’s family has its roots, and the change of setting brings her fifth-grade memories back into focus. While staying there, Taeko throws herself into farm work and finds an easy welcome among relatives and villagers. Their warmth, along with the past she keeps revisiting, leads her to question whether the life she has chosen in the city is truly the one she wants.
Blending slice-of-life observation with romance, the film finds drama in ordinary routines, family hospitality, rural work, and the quiet pull of memory. Its mood is warm and thoughtful rather than driven by spectacle, giving Taeko’s changing feelings room to develop naturally. Childhood recollections and adult decisions meet as she considers how earlier experiences still shape her understanding of the present. That balance between everyday detail and emotional reflection gives the story its distinctive appeal.
Released in 1991, Only Yesterday is a finished movie with one episode. Start with this film from the beginning and follow Taeko as her countryside stay connects her present life with memories from school age. Its compact movie format makes the complete story a single, self-contained viewing experience.
