Onmyoji

Onmyoji

Onmyouji · 陰陽師

In prosperous ancient Kyoto, feelings such as yearning, obsession, and burning desire can swell beyond control and take demonic form. Court musician Minamoto Hiromasa, grandson of Emperor Daigo, seeks answers about disturbances troubling the capital. His search leads him to Abe Seimei, a celebrated onmyoji whose otherworldly presence matches his skill at solving strange cases. With the city’s peace at risk, Hiromasa must persuade this distant diviner to confront the forces behind the disturbances.

Rather than sharing Seimei’s indifference to ordinary concerns, Hiromasa is frustrated by his reluctance to help. Even so, the pair begin facing the demons connected to the incidents and uncover the presence of Ashiya Doman, an onmyoji moving unseen behind them. Their circle grows to include Hiromasa’s flute teacher, Imperial Prince Atsumi; Kamo Yasunori, the emperor’s onmyoji; and Lady Tsuyuko, who joins after a particular case. As their personal feelings become entangled, Seimei and Hiromasa must discover whether peace can return to the capital.

Blending supernatural mystery with drama, the series connects its demonic threats to emotions that people cannot keep contained. Its ancient Kyoto setting, courtly tensions, and contrast between Hiromasa’s concern for the everyday world and Seimei’s detachment give the central partnership a distinctive shape. The story also explores how unlikely companions are drawn together by cases that affect them deeply.
