Mima Kirigoe is a member of the pop idol group CHAM!, but she decides to leave that role and pursue acting. The change is meant to move her career forward, yet it also brings resistance: one devoted fan refuses to accept her new direction. As Mima takes on an acting role, the pressure around her career begins to feel increasingly threatening.

Her manager, Rumi Hidaka, has reservations about the part, but Mima proceeds. On the film set, strange events affect people connected with the production. At the same time, Mima’s mental state begins to fray, making it harder for her to tell what is real and what belongs to fantasy. The story’s tension gathers around her effort to keep working while facing a stalker and an increasingly uncertain grasp on reality.

Presented as a thriller and horror movie, Perfect Blue brings the unease of celebrity, unwanted attention and a destabilizing career change into the same story. Mima’s shift from idol to actress gives the conflict a personal center: she is trying to establish herself in a new role while the boundaries between performance and everyday life grow difficult to trust. The film is a single, finished movie from 1998, listed as one episode. Start here to follow Mima’s move into acting and the unsettling consequences that follow.
